L-Arginine
A Semi-essential Amino Acid
What is
L-Arginine?
The "L" in L-Arginine means
it is one of the most common natural amino acids. It is
classified as a semi-essential amino acid, which means a
healthy body can make sufficient amounts on its own, through
the kidneys and liver. It can be converted into glycogen or
glucose if needed, essential energy sources. L-Arginine not
only helps the body make creatine, L-proline and
L-glutamate, but also helps to eliminate ammonia (a waste
byproduct). It assists in relaxing the blood vessels
through its assitance in making nitric oxide.
L-Arginine has been used for sexual dysfunction and to
enhance sexual performance due to increased blood flow to
the penis.
The production of L-arginine
decreases with age, so supplementation does provide an
anti-aging benefit. Generally, it is recommended to keep
supplementation under 2000 milligrams per day.
